Don’t be put off by the long, narrow road that climbs up from San Lorenzo in Banale through a ravine: up there at 2,400 metres above sea level is the spectacular Val d'Ambiez, where you’ll find the refuge, built in the thirties in the middle of an amphitheatre of rock, on the wild, southern slopes of the Brenta Group. Can you see those huge boulders near the refuge? They are what remains of the Torre Jandl, which collapsed in July 1957, miraculously sparing guests of the refuge, who gathered at the little church nearby. Those boulders are now a venue for summer climbing courses organised by the SAT (Association of Trentino Mountaineers) mountaineering school and based at the refuge.
Opening
From mid-June to early October.
Before leaving for your hike, always contact the manager to verify the actual opening of the mountain hut.
Itineraries
It takes 2 ½ hours to get to the Rifugio Dodici Apostoli “Fratelli Garbari” on the Castiglioni via ferrata (EEA-MD). There are two routes to the Rifugio Tosa “Tommaso Pedrotti”, both taking 3 hours: one on the (difficult) Brentari via ferrata (EEA), the other on the Palmieri path (EE).
